Government distributes 12 million books for new education system

The Government has distributed a total of 12.5 million textbooks to public primary schools in the country.

Principal Secretary for Early Learning and Basic Education Belio Kipsang said yesterday, 7.8 million textbooks are for Grade Literacy, popularly known as 'Tusome'.

The other 4.35 million books are for Early Grade Mathematics. They will be used by grade two and three learners.

“The textbooks are aligned to Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) that the Government has rolled out in grades one to three from the 2019 calendar year,” Kipsang said.

He then immediately gave notice for the English and Kiswahili textbooks to be distributed from go-downs in Nairobi's Industrial Area.

Kipsang said the Government is implementing Early Grade Literacy Programme in conjunction with American aid organisation, USAID.

The PS said textbooks on hygiene, environment and religion will be distributed to all public primary schools by February.

Kipsang added that there are now a total of 23 million textbooks in public primary schools that are catering for the CBC.
