Elephant tramples old man

A 71-year-old man was yesterday trampled to death by an elephant in Marmanet, Laikipia West, prompting protests  residents.

Richard Kinyua becomes the second victim after a Kenya Wildlife Service officer was killed by an elephant in Rumuruti forest a month ago.

Another woman, Millicent Wangui, is recuperating at home after she survived an elephant attack a week ago.

Kinyua, a former head teacher at Kinguti Primary School, was killed in his home compound after a herd of elephants invaded it.

“It was around 5am when the animals invaded his potato farm. Not knowing, one of the elephants charged at him from behind,” said Marmanet Ward Rep Simon Kanyutu. He died on the spot.

Nyahururu KWS senior warden Jacob Orahale said more officers had been deployed to chase the elephants back to the forest.

He assured residents that normalcy would return once an electric fence being constructed around the forest was completed.
