Suicide at in-laws’: Man hangs himself after fight with wife

A man committed suicide in his in-laws' compound at Anin village in Keiyo North.

The man identified as Daniel Chesang is said to have gone to the home on Tuesday to get his wife and child back.

His wife identified as Mercy Jepkemoi is said to have left her matrimonial home in Kabartonjo, Baringo County, after they quarrelled.

A neighbour, Eziline Kemboi, said Chesang visited the home in November to ask his wife to return home, but she refused.

Ms Kemboi said he might have decided to take his life out of frustration after his latest attempt to save his marriage failed.

Chesang's body was later found hanging from a tree near his brother-in-law's house.

Always quarrelled

"They quarrelled each time Chesang came for her. When he came in November, Chesang stayed for a whole week begging her to go back with him but she declined," said Kemboi.

She added: "And on Sunday, they traded harsh words when Chesang arrived at his in-laws' house. They were chased away but they went to a neighbour's home where they continued quarrelling. The neighbour also chased them away.

"On Monday, they went back to Jepkemoi's brother's house. In the evening, he was overheard saying he was going away and would never come back only for his body to be found hanging from a tree.”

Neighbours said Ms Jepkemoi, 24, and a mother of a five-year-old boy, had vowed never to return to her husband.

Ms Kemboi said Chesang's body was found hanging from a tree in a thicket near his brother-in-law’s house.

Keiyo North Administration Police boss Joseph Biwott said Chesang committed suicide after Jepkemoi's parents refused to allow him to get his wife and child back. The body was taken to Iten County Referral Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
