A court session was briefly halted when a seven-year-old girl testifying in a defilement case broke down on seeing the suspect.

Levi Opiro has denied defiling the minor on March 26 at Namirama village, Navakholo sub-county.

The Class Three pupil narrated how the suspect lured her into his house shortly after she came back from school.

When she was asked if she could identify the suspect in court, the girl looked at the dock, then broke into tears, prompting Kakamega Senior Resident Magistrate Erick Malesi to direct that she be given time to calm down.

The court heard that the girl, who lives with her grandparents, was enticed into the house of the accused. Her guardians had gone to a funeral.

Her grandmother testified how she noticed that the girl had started fearing being left alone.

She told the court that she examined the girl two days later and she told her what had happened. She was taken at Navakholo District Hospital and was treated and a P3 form filled.
