Nakuru ABC is recruiting more players following a decision by Boxing Association of Kenya not to support clubs fielding less than six players in the top league this season.

So far, they have identified some talented youngsters who featured in the Jamhuri Boxing Championships against Kaloleni ABC at Madison Square Garden last month to beef up their squad ahead of the National Boxing League that box-off in March.

Owing to qualification criteria set by International Boxing Federation (AIBA), the club might skip the top league this season.

However, head coach Carlos Muthee Mwangi said he is optimistic of picking a squad for the National Boxing League.

"Some of these players have been with the club for the past two years after involving them in the same tournaments and several friendly matches and they should be in a position to feature in the league championships in due course," Mwangi told The Standard Sports.

Mwangi said he was determined to make a comeback in the shortest time possible.

BAK Vice President Albert Matito said the new rules would ensure players mature from one stage to the other before being allowed to feature in the top flight league championships.

"Their participation in the lower competitions allows them to mature with time from one competition to the other ahead of the senior tournaments,” he added.

Matito warned they do not want a situation where players are rushed through the ranks without the necessary maturity.

“It can only injure the reputation of the federation and thus expose the player to unnecessary injuries, which can be avoided if they are allowed to pass through the ranks,” added Matito. [Ben Ahenda]
