On fire Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) continue to top the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) women’s Premier League standing with 30 points after a total of 15 matches in the season.

KPA boosted their stay at the top by thrashing visiting Strathmore Sword 63-44 over the weekend in a game where Felmas Adhiambo contributed 13 points for the dockers. Edna Kola had similar points for the students.

But KPA needs to be wary of defending champions Equity Bank who have surged forward, and are now breathing down their neck. They are in second place with 28 points.

Mercy Wanyama nailed 21 points for Equity as they disciplined former champions Eagle Wings 81-40 at the historic Nyayo Nationals Stadium gymnasium on Sunday. The bankers have so far lost two matches out of the 15 they have played this year.

Even though they lost heavily to the dockers in Mombasa, Strathmore Swords’ hope of making it to the playoffs at the end of the season is still alive and kicking. Strathmore, who still has a game at hand, have so far amassed 21 points out of the 14 matches they have contested.

Interestingly, Strathmore has won seven matches and has lost a similar number. Newly promoted side Zetech University are perched in fourth place behind the Swords even though the two sides have everything in common in the standings from total points to matches played, won and lost.

Co-op Bank have not been impressive since the second leg began even though they managed to pull a 65-41 win against Kenyatta University Oryx at the weekend.

United States International University (USIU) are yet to play a game since the league resumed after the elections. This is because they had closed school and opened their semester last week which was coupled with graduation.

USIU head coach George Mayienga is hopeful that they will rise from sixth place position in the standings to a more respectable place during their next game scheduled for this weekend.

Meanwhile, Nairobi Basketball Association (NBA) has announced its play-offs date and the formats.

NBA chairman Ronny Owino stated that the NBA regular season which started on March 25 will end on September 25 ahead of the playoff scheduled to kick off on September 30.

“The women’s play-offs will start in the quarters and will be played to the best of three series. The team that bags two matches will proceed to semis which will be played to the best of five,” said Owino.
