Golf: Mudanyi emerges tops in 2017 Kabete Open tournament

Edwin Mudanyi is the ultimate champion of the 2017 Kabete Open golf championship that was held at the par 72 Vet Lab golf course over the weekend.

The home golfer, who was the overnight leader, rounded up the three round-tournament with an excellent total of 221 gross to land the overall title.

During the 54-hole event, Mudanyi started round one on Friday with a disastrous four over par 76 gross, then played the best score of a one under par 71 gross in the second round on Saturday, before rounding up the final rounds on Sunday evening with a two over par 74 gross for victory.

“For the past three months, I have been working on my swings with a Dutch golf coach John Patrick Von Liefland and I am glad everything is now in shape. This win is a fresh start to better things in the Kenya Amateur golf championships," said Mudanyi.

The tournament that attracted 81 amateurs saw Nyali’s Agil Is Haq tie for second position with Vet Lab’s Mike Kisia after each returned a total of 225 gross.

Others in the top 10 list included Samuel Njoroge (Railways)-226, Mutahi Kibugu (Muthaiga)-228, Peter Rimui (Thika)-228, Ben Omondi (Ruiru)-229, John Karichu (Limuru)-229, Jay Sandhu (Royal)-230 and Kevin Juma (Royal)-230.

This is the 10th Golf Union championships tournament this year and counts towards the Kenya Amateur golf championship calendar.

The next event goes to the lakeside for the Nyanza Open on August 26-27, where amateurs will be playing in the 36-hole competition.

Action will then go to the Karen Course on September 2-3, Kericho (September 16-17), Eldoret (November 4-5) and Royal (December 2-3).

The 18-series Championships will culminate in a 54-hole event, the Nyali Open, in Mombasa on December 9-10.

Meanwhile, handicap 8 Engineer K. Njoroge won the 2017 Xtranet golf event on 39 stableford points (20,19) at Muthaiga. [Maarufu Mohamed]
