Parliament fails to elect members to EALA

It is now clear Kenya will not send representatives to the regional assembly.

The process of picking the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MPs has hit a snag following a dispute between the Government and the Opposition.

CORD had been asked to submit additional names before its representatives to the Arusha-based parliament are selected but it has declined.

A section of MPs have expressed reservations with the list of names CORD provided.

A report of a joint parliamentary committee tabled in both houses recommended adjustment of election timelines to allow the process.

And now, Parliament has adjourned without an agreement by both sides on how the impasse will be resolved.

EALA adjourned indefinitely to give Kenya time to pick its representatives.

Senate Majority Leader Kithure Kindiki said CORD must comply and submit more names to choose from.
