KU facilities to be ready in time, Prof Wainana assures

First Lady Mrs Margaret Kenyatta and KU Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainaina.

Kenyatta University accommodation facilities to be used for IAAF athletics championships are almost ready, acting Vice Chancellor Paul Wainaina told a stakeholders’ breakfast meeting at City Hall on Tuesday.

He made the declaration during the unveiling of the Nairobi county government social media slogan and banner that will form part of the public campaign to get city residents to support the championships.

The event was officiated by Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and his deputy Jonathan Mueke.

The championship hash tag slogan is #Twendekasa. Over 2,500 athletes and officials are converging at Kasarani for the Under 18 Yyouth championships and KU is the designated games village. The national government has pumped in close to Sh4 billion to ensure the event is a success.

Prof Wainaina assured the public that the renovations at the Games Village are almost complete and said the students’ hostels had been upgraded.

“The brief was to upgrade to a three-star hotel, but I think we have managed to raise the standards to four star,” he said.

Dr Kidero announced the county would waive advertising fees to allow corporate firms to support the city in promoting the games.

The county government plans elaborate roadshows and a media campaign to sensitise city residents to the event.

“We want to ensure Kasarani is packed and full during the championships and the county government is working hard to complement the Local Organising Committee’s efforts to ensure the games are a success.”
