Two-time winners Thika Queens proved their champions' tag in the Kenya Football Federation women premier league round one fixtures over the weekend.

Queens, who were unbeaten in last season's campaign, were the biggest winners after they defeated Makolanders 4-1 in a high-scoring match.

Speaking after the match, Queens coach Richard Kanyi said he expected a tough match against Makolanders, whom they defeated 6-3 last season.

"It was a good start for the team and a morale booster to the ladies. The team is good in shape and new players are coordinating well. We had some shortcomings, but we will work on them before our next match," said Kanyi.

Mathare Women shocked Soccer Sisters 3-1 in another Zone A fixture at MYSA Grounds, while their neighbours Kayole Starlet squeezed a 1-0 win over Soccer Queens.

Starlet are playing in the top league for their first time, while Mathare are making a comeback since 2012.

Mathare coach Boniface Omondi said it was a good start for his side and he is expecting a brighter season.

"It's a good gesture for MYSA to reintroduce a women's team and we are now going to put efforts to make sure we post good results this season. Our first match is gone and we are focusing on our next opponent next weekend," he said.

Kayole Starlet coach Joshua Sakwa said things were bound to get tough for his charges considering the team does not have a sponsor.

"It will not be easy especially when we are playing away matches because of lack of sufficient funds. We are looking for a well-wisher to enable us honour all our matches this season," he said.

Meanwhile, Kariobangi Sharks picked their second win of the season after defeating Nakumatt 1-0 at Machakos Stadium yesterday.
