Swimmers set for SA meeting

74 swimmers hit qualifying times for the forthcoming international meets in Dubai and South Africa after the Kenya Swimming Federation, Nairobi Branch Level Two gala held at the weekend.

One of the swimmers who made the cut in the competitive contests is Bubbles Swim Club ace Maina Kagure who amassed eight points after she topped the girls U 8-9 100m backstroke in 1:13.21.

Kagure, who was the only candidate who qualified in a pool of 15 contestants in the category, said she was glad to have emerged victorious in the tough contest as it was not easy coming all the way from the heats up to the finals.

“This win is as a result of hard work and dedication which forms the basis of our club motto. I am grateful to my colleagues and coaches whose inspiration pushed me beyond limits to be better than I was last year,” said Maina who was also the overall winner in the girls U 8-9 contests with 20 points.

Shania Rimui of Aga Khan Academy was second in 1:56.37 while Maina’s team mate Abby Karanja was third in 1:58.26.
