Thika United, Sofapaka and Muhoroni axed from Premier League for failing to meet CAF licensing rules

Three Kenyan Premier League (KPL) clubs Thika United, Sofapaka and Muhoroni Youth have been relegated for failing to meet licensing requirements.

Consequently, only 15 clubs will take part in the top tier league next season.

The clubs that will take part include four that took part in the Nationwide Super League (NSL) last season.

Champions Tusker, Ulinzi Stars and Bandari got full licenses to participate.

Those with provisional licenses to take part are: AFC Leopards, Gor Mahia, Kakamega Homeboyz, Chemelil, Posta Rangers, Western Stima, Mathare United, Sony, Nakumatt, Zoo Kericho, Kariobangi Sharks and Nzoia Sugar.

According to Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa the three clubs failed to be awarded the all-important license after failing on legal and financial criteria aspects.

“We have signed a none disclosure agreement with the clubs which means we cannot reveal the exact details as to why they failed to be licensed. However, they have to do with legal and financial criteria,” he said.

Mwendwa said the affected clubs can appeal if they feel aggrieved including going to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).

“We have an appeal channel and if anyone feels aggrieved they can follow this process. If they are still not satisfied they can go to CAS,” he revealed.

He warned that clubs with provisional licenses have six months to get full licenses or they risk missing out on the 2018 season.

“I want to point out that clubs with provisional licenses must come back and fulfill all the required conditions for a full license. If they dont then they will not be eligible for the 2018 season.

“Furthermore, club licensing is an annual requirement that everyone must abide by,” he revelead.

He hailed the process as the best way to bring professionalism.

“There are good aspects of this process. Now we have all the contracts between clubs and coaches and can step in if there is a problem.”

Contacted for comment KPL Chief Executive Officer Jack Oguda said:”We are waiting to hear from the clubs as to the reasons why they have been denied the license and then we can make a decision after that.”
