A police officer was yesterday shot and wounded in a confrontation with suspected thugs in Kayole, Nairobi.

The police shot and killed one suspect, while the other two escaped on foot. Witnesses said the gang had confronted, shot and killed a motorist in Corner area before trying to escape.

Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome said this prompted a chase by police that left one gunmen dead.

The killing brought to 14 the number of people killed in Nairobi since Christmas Day. On Thursday night, a robber was lynched in Chokaa along Kangundo Road.

Two other suspected robbers were on Tuesday night shot dead by police in a botched robbery in Huruma area. The two, aged 25 and 28, were killed after a woman they were robbing screamed for help, Mr Koome said.

He said another man aged 30 was found dead on the roadside in Embakasi area.

He is believed to have been stabbed by thugs who robbed him of his cash and other valuables on Tuesday.

In Kitui village near Buruburu, a man was on the same day lynched after he stabbed two men in a robbery.

In a separate incident on the same day a man was found dead with stab wounds in the stomach and chest on the roadside in Dandora.

Police say they suspect the man, who worked as a hairdresser in Korogocho, was killed elsewhere and his body dumped in the area.
