Former Nairobi Mayor George Aladwa to appear in court for hate speech

Former Nairobi Mayor George Aladwa has been summoned to appear in court on Friday to plead to criminal charges against him.

Mr Aladwa, who is the ODM Nairobi branch chairman, is facing charges of incitement to violence contrary to Section 96 (a) of the Penal Code.

Nairobi Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo issued the summons following an application by the Assistant Director of Public Prosecution Leonard Maingi.

"Investigations into utterances made by Aladwa are complete and the Director of Public Prosecutions has made a decision to charge him," Mr Maingi said.

It is alleged that on October 20 at Kamukunji grounds in Kibera, Aladwa said blood would be shed if Opposition leader Raila Odinga lost the 2017 elections unfairly.

Aladwa was arrested by flying squad officers at the Railways Club and is out on Sh20,000 cash bail after an application by his lawyers John Khaminwa, Harun Ndubi and Anthony Oluoch.
