Bodies of Egerton University students found at city mortuary

Bodies of two second-year students of Egerton University main campus in Njoro were found at the City Mortuary in Nairobi over the weekend, two weeks after they went missing.

The two were allegedly shot dead in a case of mistaken identity in Nairobi.

Egerton University’s students union chairman Isaac Ongoma told The Standard students want security agents to hasten investigations.

Mr Ongoma said the two students, Felix Magomere, a Biochemistry student and Dennis Nyangena, a General Science student left Egerton two weeks ago to visit a friend in Nairobi but never returned.

“The two left the college after the week’s lessons only to be reported dead. Students are worried about their security and want the Government to provide information on the cause of their death,” said Mr Ongoma.

David Makenzi, Magomere’s father said he received a phone call from his son informing him that he was headed to the Higher Education Loans Board offices in Nairobi to follow up on his loan application.

Makenzi said after arriving in Nairobi on November 7, the two escorted a friend  to board a matatu back to the campus but did not return home.

He recorded a statement at Nairobi Central Police Station after two weeks of checking with relatives, friends and the institution.

On November 21, he said he went back to the station where he was told by an officer that the two had been shot dead at Globe Roundabout area after indulging in mugging.

“An officer at Central Police Station said Nyangena had been shot while my son was knocked down by a police vehicle while escaping from the scene of crime,” alleged Makenzi.

He was then advised to search at City Mortuary. “Security agents should come clean on what caused the death of the two. Even if there was mugging, proper investigations could have been done,” said the grieving father. The institution’s security officer Hilary Chebii said they were collaborating with police to trace the students after they were reported missing.
