Abel Rop broke the tape after 38:30 minutes to emerge champion in the Lang’ata District cross country championships, which was held at the District Officer grounds in Kibera over the weekend.
Rop led the men’s 12km tedious contest under sweltering heat with stiff opposition from Issack Kosgei, Frankline Asidaga and Theuri Wachira. He was able to break from the alternating trio in the third lap with strong strides, leaving the three to settle for the remaining positions in that order.
“I am planning to carry on with this trademark at the regional contest, my other aim is to cause upset in the national trials where I intend to fight for a place in the world cross country squad,” said Rop.

Tecla Jepleting, though was the race favourite, struggled to win the women’s senior 8km race timed at 28:36. Sandra Chebet (21:51) and Elvis Cheboi (26:18) were winners in the women and men junior 8km categories.
Apart from Lang’ata, other Nairobi districts that held their cross country championships at the weekend are Kasarani, Starehe, Dagoreti, Westlands, Kamukunji, Makadara and Njiru.
The districts were preparing to release their finest squads for the regional cross country championships scheduled for February 2 in the capital.
“Nairobi region plans to take 24 athletes, six in each category, to the national championships and it is our hope that they will perform better and if possible cause upsets,” said Nairobi AK chairman Barnabas Korir.
The national championships that will also act as trials for the World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland in March will be held on February 16 at Uhuru Gardens also in Nairobi.
