Wanted Kimilili MP-elect Didmus Barasa has finally surrendered to the police after being on the run for two days.

Bungoma County Police Commander Francis Kooli confirmed to The Standard that the MP presented himself to the authorities at Bungoma Police Station on Friday morning accompanied by several other people believed to be part of his legal team.

Barasa surrendered a day after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss George Kinoti issued him a six hours’ ultimatum to surrender so as to shed light on the death of Brian Olunga, his rival's aide.

“Hon Barasa, is wanted for the cold-blooded murder of Brian Olunga, whom he shot on the forehead killing him on the spot, on Tuesday, August 8, at Chebukwabi in Kimilili, Bungoma county,” Kinoti said in a statement on Thursday.

At the time of going to press, it was not clear if the specialised team of sleuths from the elite Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau and the Homicide department had caught up with the MP before he surrendered.

The warning to surrender came hours after Barasa tweeted from an undisclosed location thanking Kimilili voters for re-electing him for another term.

“Thank you the great people of KIMILILI CONSTITUENCY for re-electing me overwhelmingly for another term. I LOVE YOU TO BITS”, Barasa tweeted via his verified Twitter account at 1:06pm on Thursday, August, 11.

The MP, who vied under UDA party, was declared winner by IEBC on August 11, after garnering 26,861 votes against DAP-K’s Brian Khaemba’s 9,497 although the Kimilili Returning Officer George Omondi refused to hand over the election certificate to his agents after being declared winner in the Kimilili polls.
