Mombasa, Kenya: A university lecturer has challenged secondary school principals to embrace research in the management of schools.
Mount Kenya University Director of Research Dr Francis Muregi said research is not a preserve of institutions of higher learning.
He said secondary school heads stand to save a lot of money if they adopt what he termed “basic applied operation research” to run their schools.
Addressing school heads in Mombasa Wednesday, Dr Muregi noted that a mere attempt to make comparison of commodity prices that teachers buy for school use before making payments, constitutes crucial research.
He said some schools have huge chunks of land but still purchase vegetables from suppliers.
“If we put that piece of land into some profitable use you will save a lot of money and you will not be crippled by late release of free education money,” he said.
The don said schools that keep cattle can also save a lot of money from milk. “If you have a lot of cattle you also save on buying meat from the butcher because one animal slaughtered can do wonders,” he said.
