Kenya: Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has challenged the African Union (AU) to demonstrate commitment in nurturing democracy and tackling poverty.

Raila argued that to effect real change, the AU needs to guide Africa to a new awakening of a continental democratic revolution.

“There is no freedom in an island surrounded by a sea of poverty and ignorance. As long as this continues, political freedom faces an uncertain future,” the ex-PM warned.

Raila made the remarks while making a keynote address at the Woodrow Wilson International Centre Africa Programme in the USA.

“I believe this vision is within our reach. But it will be realised only if there is vigorous and sustained implementation of policy and institutional reforms,” he stressed.

The former PM said the region’s development depends on how African countries manage their political, economic and technological relations both internally and internationally.

“Better governance of mineral revenues, higher agricultural prices, and rapid urbanisation represent opportunities for making growth more inclusive and more effective in reducing poverty,” he urged.

Unhealthy competition

He singled out quality leadership and citizen involvement as the key ingredients for accelerated development.

Raila also highlighted the importance of devising strategies to manage unhealthy political competition and even conflict.

The former premier said non-state actors such as private sector, academics, researchers and the media should be afforded space to support pan-African revival.

Raila took issue with the recent move to exclude civil society actors from African Union events saying it militates against social inclusivity.

“I have mourned Africa’s betrayal, but I have also celebrated Africa’s moments of triumph and Africa’s re-emergence,” admitted Raila.

He added: “I continue to have faith in the future of my continent, and I fully associate with the current wave of international optimism concerning Africa’s future.”
