Nairobi, Kenya: Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku has prevailed upon the National Police Service Commission to accept the appointments made by Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo for County Command.
This came after a meeting between the Commission Chairman Johnston Kavuludi and Kimaiyo.
Addressing the media after the meeting yesterday, the two were at pains to field questions. Lenku did not satisfactory answer the issue of whether the officers named will serve on temporary or permanent basis.
Lenku was hard pressed to clarify the ranks that the officers will occupy and their title when he insisted they were “just officers in charge of the counties” and not County commanders contrary to an internal memo issued by Kimaiyo.
They also did not explain what will happen to the officers who applied and were shortlisted for the positions.
Ironically, it is Kimaiyo who had asked the commission to place the advert to recruit the commanders in line with the law whereby, they have to be vetted before being appointed and deployed.
The meeting was called after Kimaiyo named 47 Administration Police County Commanders amid protest from the National Police Service Commission.
Those Kimaiyo named AP commanders are Francis Mburu for Nairobi County, Joseph Keitany (Machakos), Rashid Yakub (Lamu), Njiru Dickson (Trans-Nzoia), Joseph Mwaniki (Bomet), Doson Manzi (Homabay), Samuel Kimwere (Kajiado), Agustus Muthee (Garrisa), Dismus Nyakundi (Kiambu), Josephat Kinyua (Muranga) and Albert Hama (Mandera).
