My wife is a huge embarrassment to me
Dear Harold,
I separated with my wife recently but now she is a huge bother. She comes to my house without invitation which is invasion of my privacy. At times, she walks in when I have visitors and starts throwing tantrums that I broke our marriage and kicked her out of the house yet we mutually agreed to separate following her extra-marital affairs. I stay in an apartment and her shouting is a great nuisance to my neighbours. I contemplated divorce but settled for separation to avoid the stigma associated with divorce. I am now tired of her unbecoming behaviour. Is there a legal way I can keep her off my life?
Peter, Nairobi.
Dear Peter
It is legally possible to stop your separated wife from hounding you. Following your judicial separation (separation by a court order), it is possible to seek services of an advocate of the High Court to make an application for a restraining order.
The directive from the court will practically stop your wife from coming to your house without your invitation to bother, insult or harass you. The orders may also keep her away from you either temporarily or permanently. If she disobeys the order, she will be in contempt of court and could serve six months in prison – without the option of a fine. Even wives can seek restraining orders to bar their separated or divorced husbands from hounding them.
