Kenya: The Government has announced plans to hire more than 1,200 vehicles at a cost Sh3 billion to boost police operations across the country.
Firms interested in leasing the vehicles have until June 27 to do so. The National Treasury yesterday advertised the bidding.
“The fleet to be leased will comprise approximately 1,200 vehicles of different makes ranging from 1300cc to 3500cc, commercial vehicles of up to 15 tonnes, with coverage expected to be approximately 60 million kilometres annually,” read part of the advert.
The arrangement, according to the advert, shall include insurance, scheduled and unscheduled maintanance, replacement of non-functional vehicles, globally benchmarked fleet management, implants in Government offices to monitor the fleet and capacity building for personnel.
The notice stated the current model of Government in which ministries manage their fleet has often been accompanied by increasing costs of transport services without commensurate improvements in services delivery.
The plans are part of the proposed police reforms, which President Uhuru Kenyatta said are bearing fruit. He also said the Government has set aside Sh4 billion to buy modern security equipment annually.
