Kenya: The military has been urged to join the war against drug abuse in the country and region.

Chief of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) General Julius Karangi said yesterday the menace of drugs, alcohol and other substances is serious hence called for the involvement of the military.

“I urge you to help in tackling drug abuse in the country because as you heard the Commander in Chief say, it is a serious problem,” he said.

Gen Karangi hinted the problem affects almost the entire society and the military cannot be left out.

He was referring to comments by President Uhuru Kenyatta that the problem of drug and alcohol abuse was serious and needs concerted efforts of all to address.

Karangi made the remarks when he presided over the opening of the third military course at the Kenyatta University.

The group of cadets is the third intake since 2010 when the military and KU signed a Memorandum of Understanding to offer a military science course. Vice Chancellor Prof Olive Mugenda was present.

The military boss said the contemporary warfare needs educated military hence the reason they have decided to ensure their personnel get the required skills.

“I tell the military that the wars of today demand an educated personnel. That is why we are here to ensure our personnel get the required education,” said Karangi.

He said they are promoting education in the military in all avenues and that KU’s course will see the personnel graduate with a degree in military science. Karangi added that the military will continue to ensure the country is peaceful and stable in all aspects to boost development.

Prof Mugenda said the institution has the infrastructure to offer the training to the military personnel to enable them meet the societal demands. “As the university fraternity, I wish to assure you we have what it takes to take you through the course,” she said.

She challenged the cadets to aspire to serve the country when they graduate.
