NAKURU; KENYA: Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua is an embattled man.

Slightly over two months after he was sworn in as governor, Mr Mbugua is on the spotlight over his leadership style, with critics accusing him of alienating other leaders in the management of the county.

Last week, Mbugua was forced to go back to the drawing board after six of his nominees to the executive committee were rejected by County Assembly. The six nominees were found unsuitable by the appointment committee despite possessing impressive academic credentials.

There was intense lobbying to have all the names approved by the assembly before the tabling of the report. However, county ward representatives, who had promised to support the nominees, changed their positions after the report was tabled in the Chamber.

Rough time

It was the second time the Governor failed to have his position carry the day on a key issue.

During the election of the Speaker, the candidate favoured by the governor was floored. “We want the governor to know that unless he changes his leadership style, he is going to have a rough time in the Chamber,” one of the county ward representatives said after the session. The Appointment Committee whose report was unanimously adopted, however, cleared four of the nominees.

Those interviewed by The Standard have expressed displeasure with the manner in which Mbugua appointed members of his Cabinet.
