Nyamira, Kenya: Administration Police officers in Nyamira County have rescued a two-week-old boy from the hands of a child trafficking suspect.
The infant was allegedly kidnapped on Monday after his mother, Ms Esther Kemunto Nyakambi, left him shortly in their house but upon return she was shocked to find him missing.
The officers, led by Manga District AP Commandant Gabriel Watua, expedited investigations that led them to Nyabite area in Nyamira town, some 20 kilometres away where the woman was preparing to escape to Nakuru.
Police found out Ms Nyakambi was the child’s real mother after he accepted to be breastfed by her. The toddler had spent over 48 hours without breastfeeding.
Nyakambi was over the moon with joy after the child she gave birth to barely two weeks ago was found.
“I am happy now. I felt like it was the end of the world after I found out my child was missing. I thank police officers for helping me get him back,” said an elated Nyakambi.
Mr Watua told The Standard preliminary investigations point to a deal where the suspect intended to sell the child for Sh500.
“The woman is being held at Nyamira Police Station and is assisting in investigations. We are told she has a history of selling children. She allegedly sold hers upon giving birth a few years ago,” said Watua.
He praised area assistant chief Robert Mekenya and Kemera APs for arresting the suspect.
Manga DC Jacob Narengo said the incident was third to be reported and warned those involved in the illegal trade.
