Nairobi, Kenya: Cases of abduction rose in Kenya to 114 last year as compared to the 85 that were reported in 2011.

Cases of bestiality also rose to 50 last year as compared to the 10 that were reported in 2011, 49 in 2010, 9 in 2009 and 22 in 2008.

Official statistics show there was an increase in crime last year with 83,853 people reported to police in for committing a crime as compared to the 82,052 and 67,362 in 2010.

According to the Economic Survey report, less number of guns were recovered last year compared to 2011.

The report showed 236 guns were recovered last year as compared to 304 in 2011 and 252 in 2010.

Murder cases rose to 2,008 in 2012 from 1,593 in 2011 while suicide stood at 323 last year, 163 in 2011.

The report says robbery cases hit 4,309 last year as compared to 3,529 in 2011.

Rape cases reported to police decreased by almost 100 in 2012 as compared to those recorded in 2011.

Police statistics show there were 883 cases in 2012, 1,051 in 2011, 699 in 2010. There were more female rapists in 2012 than those reported in 2011.

There were 44 female rapists in 2012, 27 in 2011, 138 in 2010, four in 2009 and 222 in 2008. This is in contrast to the 839 male rapists that were reported in 2012, 1,024 in 2011, and 561 in 2010.

In general, crime incidents increased by 2.8 percent last year as compared to those that happened in 2011.

There were 77,859 crimes that were reported in 2012 as compared to the 75,733 that were recorded in 2011.

The report says economic crimes reduced by 51 percent in 2012 to hit 3,592 as compared to the 7,326 that were recorded in 2011.

Crime is a major issue that affects economic development in any society and given to the current trend, there is a likelihood the incidents will increase by the end of the year.
