KENYA: An elderly man fighting for his life at the Coast Provincial General Hospital after an attack left his private organ severed can now breathe a sigh of relief.
Surgeons at the hospital have successfully reattached his partially severed organ. However, experts at the hospital Thursday indicated it is not possible to determine if the victim will regain full sexual function of his organ.
Hospital administrator Dr Bernard Mwero told The Standard: “We are not in a position to determine if the organ will be able to be fully functional because the patient is still recovering.”
Ali Tembea was attacked by unknown people in Msambweni area in Kwale County on Wednesday.
On Thursday, he had regained consciousness after a successful operation said to have taken several hours.
Tembea, 72, who lives alone, is said to have been tricked by four men who called at his house in the night pretending to be seeking directions but when he opened the door, they pounced on him and dragged him away into the darkness.
Neighbours discovered him writhing in pain by the roadside and bleeding profusely and took him to hospital.
AP commander Wilson Gichuhi said police suspect the victim was attacked by people who accused him of practicing witchcraft. “The victim was called at around 11pm by four men who pretended they were asking for directions to the village chairman but they beat him up and cut off his private parts,” said Gichuhi.
He said the patient is stable and has been transferred from the Intensive Care Unit to the normal ward.
