NAIROBI, KENYA: Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Thursday made a transit stop-over in Nairobi and was received at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and Planning Ms. Ann Waiguru. Liberia’s Honorory Consul in Kenya Mr. Kimani Benson Mathu was also in attendance.
President Sirleaf hailed the existing cordial relations between Liberia and Kenya citing the number of common views shared by the two countries on international matters.
Cabinet Secretary Waiguru noted that although bilateral trade between Liberia and Kenya has been minimal, diplomatic relations between the two countries have remained warm, with prospects of enhanced trade arising from a regular Kenya Airways flight to Monrovia.
Notable among the relations is Kenya’s participation in United Nations peacekeeping Mission in Liberia during the country’s civil war. A number of Liberian students have also benefitted from University education in Kenya.
An ardent advocate of women’s rights and eductaion, President Sirleaf won a Nobel peace prize in 2011 and made history as Africa’s first elected female head of state. She is serving a second term in office after her victory in the 2011 election.
President Sirleaf left Nairobi for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where she will attend the 21st Africa Union (AU) Summit of heads of state and government, which coincides with the golden jubilee of the Pan-African body.
