The Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) has in the past made attempts to reach out to the Government in vain.

Numerous letters written by the group to governments of Kenya and Britain, Sultan of Oman, United Nations, East African Assembly and legislators from the Coast from as far as 2005 have gone unanswered.

Top officials of MRC showed The Standard copies of the correspondences. They said the group has always wanted to use diplomacy.

The group has written more than a dozen letters, seeking dialogue, but has been ‘infuriated and shocked’ by the ‘deep silence’ and unwillingness to talk.

“We can no longer control some of our members, who lost patience and support for dialogue. This may explain some of the violent scenes witnessed at the Coast,” a top official of the group who requested anonymity said.

“However, the group in itself has not yet resolved to take the route of violence to have our demands listened,” the official said.

The first letter the group wrote was allegedly faxed to Queen of England in January 2005. They wrote reminders in October, same year. Other reminders were penned in 2007 and 2008.

One of the reminders dated December 2008, allegedly faxed to Queen Elizabeth accused the Kenya government of marginalising the coastal region.
