Iten, Kenya: Security in and outside Iten law courts in Elgeyo/Marakwet County has been beefed up following Friday incident where an advocate was stabbed by a former client inside the courtroom over alleged pay dispute.

Witnesses and suspects who had turned up for court case hearings Monday morning were shocked when police officers, unusually, subjected them to security checks before being allowed into the courtroom.

“This follows last week’s incident. The security measures are aimed at ensuring your safety and that of other court users including members of the Judiciary,” Rose Ndombi, Iten acting senior resident magistrate said. “There are two police officers in court at any given time but with the sudden turn of events, more officers should be in court to prevent any unlawful acts.”

On Friday court proceedings were suspended for the better part of the day when a suspect on an assault case trial turned to his former advocate and stabbed him on the back.
