REDZINAH NZISA WAMBUA, 22, is a student at Moi University and despite her disability; her passion for modelling saw her win the Beauty With A Purpose title in a recent contest held in Nairobi. She spoke to JAMES WANZALA
Tell us what Modelling For Peace was all about?
It was a beauty competition before the General Election aimed at using modelling to preach peace. The initiative was organised by Moi University Satellite Campus.
What made you join the pageant?
I wanted to inspire people, especially the disabled to believe in themselves and to have self-initiative in order to achieve their dreams despite their conditions.
How did you perform?
I won the Miss Beauty With A Purpose title at the event held at City Hall, Nairobi, in February. I also managed second runners-up in the main competition involving 30 participants.
What are the challenges you encountered during the competition?
I joined the other participants three weeks late practicing for only four days, but I thank God I managed a win.
What was involved in the training?
Catwalking and choreography.
Were you born disabled?
Yes— I was born at home where a caesarean operation was not possible. My left arm got dislocated when whoever was helping my mum pulled me out.
Who is Nzisa
I was born and brought up in Kangundo, Machakos County as an only child. I schooled in Tala Primary and Secondary schools, and later joined the Kenya Wildlife Service Paramilitary School with aim of becoming a policewoman. My disability, however, hindered me. Currently, I am in Second Year at Moi University, Satellite Campus pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management Degree.
Who inspires you?
My mother, she gave up her position as headmistress opting to remain a teacher so that she could give me all the attention I required. With the extra time, she was able to ensure I did not miss my medical appointments. I love her so much.
How do you balance education and modelling?
For now, I am not attached to any company. This gives me ample time to attend to my classes.
Future plans?
I want to be a representative of the disabled in Kangundo District where I hail from; to champion for their rights and empowerment. Through my research with Uwezo, a non-governmental organisation, we found out that many parents are not aware of the available special schools, hence just sit with their disabled children at home denying them the opportunity to learn and realise their dreams.
Hobbies?
Swimming, travelling and reading — that’s why I am pursuing a course in tourism. I like reading modelling magazines.
