Trans Nzoia, Kenya: Security agencies are investigating those behind leaflets dropped in Trans-Nzoia County warning of impending attacks similar to those in Bungoma and Tana River.
Intelligence officers, sources said, are piecing together information on the threats to apprehend suspects. Kitale OCPD Kimani Mitugo said several leaflets had been dropped at Kitale Police Station, Kiminini, Kiungani and Kitale town.
One of them read in part: “It was in Tana River, followed by Bungoma, where next Mr OCPD of Kitale police station? Money is sweeter but blood is thicker, do you expect we will sit and watch our people suffering?”
High alert
Some leaflets point fingers at a court ruling on a disputed land, which was allegedly biased.
“The court is for all but decisions are for the rich. Do you expect we will watch poor people suffering at the price of the rich? e.g. (Trans-Nzoia West disputed parcel of lands),” read another leaflet.
Mr Mitugo said he suspected the leaflets were related to land rows and police are gathering vital information. County Commissioner Charity Chepkong’a said security had been beefed up in the areas where the leaflets were recovered. She warned those responsible that the Government is alert.
“We are on high alert and we have put the necessary security measures to deal with those behind these leaflets,” she said.
Some disputed farms in the county are Tawai farm pitting a transport company against members of a cooperative society.
Kitale Catholic Justice and Peace Commission last January warned land rows in the area is a time bomb and asked the Government to address the situation.
It is said some individuals have over the past five years taken advantage of the Government resettlement programme to collect millions of shillings from unsuspecting residents.
