Busia, Kenya: Police in Busia have arrested people they believe to be key suspects in the recent attacks in which three people were killed and 50 others injured.
Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong said the arrest follows positive identification of the suspects by victims.
“Most of the ring leaders of the gang that attacked people in Segero, Benga and Akobwait areas have been arrested except a few who escaped to the neighbouring Uganda,” said Ojaamong.
The governor was briefing the Press on the progress in pursuit of the criminals at Busia town, Monday. He said a contingent of police officers deployed in the area has stepped up the search for other suspects still at large.
Ojaamong differed with CORD politicians who claim the attacks in the area were politically motivated.
The coalition leaders led by Senator Moses Wetangula and MPs who accompanied former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on a tour of the region on Sunday claimed the killings in Bungoma and Busia were political. But Ojaamong while addressing the same meeting dismissed the claims.
“Investigation revealed the attack could be related to a land dispute between the locals,” he said.
