The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) wants to set the legislative framework and regulation on operations of a petrol station.
The Commission said the new regulation will ensure adequate disposal of petroleum.
ERC Director-General Kaburu Mwirichia, said the Commission is structuring a new regulation that will stream line bulk transportation of petroleum.
“ERC will look into a new regulation providing license to drivers transporting petroleum. As of now, the commission only regulates transportation of LPG gas. We aim at expanding the industry,” he said at a petrol station dealers workshop in Nairobi.
Market abuse
Mwichia assured dealers that ERC would protect consumers against the abuse of market power. This he added will ensure cost recovery and financial viability of sector players and to implement government policy.
Recently cases of several fuelling stations selling unadulterated fuel have mushroomed; discrediting the Commissions’ commitment to ensuring quality fuel is dispatched.
Mwirichia said that the commission was working to reincarnate the bad perception by ensuring that all transporters were licensed, thus accountable for their actions.
This, he said will see consumers get a fair value of their money.
The three day workshop at the Kenya School of Monetary studies aims at raising awareness with a view of increasing the level of compliance in the sector. “No one will be spared as ERC will enforce and review regulations, codes and standards for the energy sector,” said Mwirichia.
