Tens of Mau Mau war veterans and the elderly have invaded and sub-divided among themselves a prime Government land in Naivasha. The more than 100-acre farm near Lake Naivasha was formerly a flower farm.
Raising the alarm, Lakeview County Ward Representative Simon Wanyoike accused some leaders of misleading the group. He said each member was paying Sh10,000 to get the piece of land and called on the provincial administration to investigate the scandal.
Wanyoike blamed a cartel for conning the unsuspecting residents, adding that the sale of the land had been going on for more than a month.
“We are perturbed by the ongoing sale of the Government land and we call on the necessary agencies to intervene,” he said.
Eviction order
Naivasha DC Mohammed Abass said he had issued an order to arrest those involved in the deal. He termed as fraudsters those involved in subdividing the land and called on citizens to beware. He confirmed the land was a Government property adding they would protect it from any grabbers. “We have information some people have invaded the land and I have ordered they be kicked out,” he said.
But speaking on phone, Mau Mau war veterans secretary Boniface Thuo denied invading the land. He said the war veterans, majority of whom were poor peasants, had been allocated temporarily the farm. “We have the blessings of the provincial administration and these peasants are farming on this land temporarily,” he said. He called on the Government to address the plight of the war veterans.
