Residents of Elgeyo/Marakwet County staged a demonstration to protest against URP list of nominees to the County Assembly presented to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Waving twigs and placards, the residents took to the streets of Iten town and accused local politicians of doctoring the original list for their self interests.

Led by the County Women Representative Susan Chebet, the residents said regional balance and special groups were not factored in the list of nominees released by electoral commission.

“We demand the original list to be published and the party officials come out clean on the issue and explain to us who altered the names,” said Dr Chebet.

According to the list released by IEBC, Keiyo South and Marakwet East constituencies were each given four nominees while Marakwet West and Keiyo North constituencies had one slot each.

Residents from Marakwet West and Keiyo North constituencies said they were short-changed.

Moiben-Kuserwo ward representative William Chesingany accused the party of ignoring the will of the people.

He said residents overwhelmingly voted for the party and if the original list of nominees is not used, it will not be business as usual.

“We have information that some well-connected individuals in the party are advancing their agenda for the next General Election and want to gain political mileage by nominating their cronies and we won’t accept that,” protested Chesingany.
