KENYA: Scores of suspects were on Sunday arrested in Mombasa’s Kisauni area after unknown number of people attacked Frere Town police station Saturday night and injured a police officer before robbing him of his gun loaded with 40 bullets.
Police said the gang had posed as people in need of help at the station before they struck at 1 am on Sunday and grabbed the G3 gun after injuring the officer who was on duty.
The weapon has not been recovered so far and efforts to get it are ongoing. Coast police boss Aggrey Adoli says a police operation is ongoing in the area and a number of suspects are under interrogation.
“We do not know who is behind the attack and efforts to get the weapon is ongoing. The injured officer was rushed to hospital where he is admitted in a stable condition,” said Adoli.
Such attacks are usually blamed on members of the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC). Police say they are yet to know the motive of taking away the gun.
MRC usually deny such accusations and term them political. Scores of police officers have in the past years been killed in such ambushes, the latest being on March 3, 2013 when 13 police officers were killed in Changamwe and Kilifi in an attack that was blamed on MRC.
Elsewhere, a female passenger was Saturday night shot dead in a carjacking and robbery on a matatu along Thika Road, Nairobi.
The matatu was headed for Githurai area when six of the passengers turned out to be robbers and took control of the bus.
Police say it was then that an argument arose between the gang and some of the passengers prompting the shooting.
Another passenger was shot and wounded in the stomach and she is admitted in hospital.
The gang later grabbed cash and other valuables before escaping to unknown destination. The route has been notorious with such incidents and efforts to address them are ongoing.
And a senior traffic officer was carjacked and robbed of cash and valuables in an attack in Ongata Rongai, Nairobi.
The officer who is in charge of Karen traffic operations was headed home on Saturday at midnight when her car was blocked by gunmen who took its control for a while terrorizing her.
Police say the officer was not injured but he lost his pocket phone and unknown amount of cash.
