Nairobi,Kenya: Coach Luc Eymael says he is delighted by the improvement and caurage his side has shown in the last two weeks but remains disappointed that AFC Leopards has not ended up with maximum points.
The team held defending champions Tusker to a 1-1 tie after making a dramatic come-back in the second half, which saw them score a late equaliser at City Stadium on Saturday.
“I have never seen so much improvement in two weeks like the one we have made but it is disappointing that we have not collected maximum profit from our effort,” he said.
Eymael said he is also disappointed by the many chances his side had against Tusker and pointed out that it is something he will focus on in the coming games.
“It was clearly our mistake that we did not get maximum points against Tusker because we created three or four clear chances in the match.
“At this level, it is required to have at least one goal from three or four opportunities that you create,” he pointed out.
High hopes
The Belgian remains delighted by the commitment and professionalism in the team and believes he can tap it for better results in the coming matches.
“Before I came here, I expected to find demoralised players but its on the contrary. I found players who are hard workers and willing to learn. With this attitude we will go places,” said the coach.
In a related development, Sony Sugar coach Sammy Omollo says he was never worried about the team’s poor performance at the beginning of the season and insists it was always a matter of time before the side ended its misfortunes in KPL.
“The problems we had were external and had nothing to do with either the technical bench or the playing unit.
Wrangles in team
“We had issues where the fans. The team and the office were pulling in different directions but this changed when we had a meeting last week and ironed out all our differences. That marked the beginning of our revival and it can only get better,” said Omollo.
The Sony coach was speaking in the wake of the team’s recent sparkling display after they stopped Tusker 1-0 and drew 1-1 with Gor Mahia on Sunday.
Before the two results, Sony had not won even a single match and were confined to the basement of the standings in a move that raised questions about the future of Omollo.
However, after the two results, Omollo insists they are out of the woods and only the sky is the limit.
“Those two results have raised the level of confidence in the team to an all time high and we expect it to get better in future matches,” he said.
Meanwhile, the last KPL Top Eight first round match will be played tomorrow at Nyayo National Stadium. The match will pit Mathare United against KPL champions Tusker. The winner of this match will play Gor Mahia in the semi-finals.
Chemelil Sugar have already made it to the semi-finals after edging out AFC Leopards and will play Thika United.
