The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) has announced the sale of the country’s strategic grain reserves of maize to refresh stocks in stores countrywide.
Gideon Misoi, the NCPB Managing Director, said the board had received the go ahead from the Special Programmes Ministry to sell the grain in its depots.
Prof Misoi said 451,102 bags of 90 kilos each are to be sold.
Transparent
“The process is transparent and we advise members of the public interested in buying the grain to visit our depots where they will get further details,” said Prof Misoi.
A 90kg bag of maize will be sold at Sh3,000.
Prof Misoi also assured Kenyans that there would be no food shortage in the country.
He addressed concerns raised by farmers about subsidised fertilisers, saying it had been supplied in Eldoret.
“The supplies we have received now are enough to meet the demand. We are urging farmers to continue preparing their farms for planting,” he said.
Over the past few weeks, farmers had been complaining that it was taking too long to receive fertiliser that they had paid for. With the onset of the rains, many had been forced to purchase more from traders at much higher prices.
