Political leaders drawn from Baringo County have appealed to both the National and County governments to consider re-opening of all livestock markets closed down in the county. ?

Last year and early this year, the Government directed the closure of all markets in the area following persistent attacks and cattle theft by raiders in the region. ?Among those closed were Amaiya, Tangulbei and Nginyang, all situated in East Pokot region.

?Led by Baringo County Assembly Speaker William Kamket, members of the County Assembly from the affected areas appealed for immediate solution to the problem in order to allow farmers sell their animals. ?

Speaking at Lake Baringo during a workshop, the Speaker said it was painful to see locals undergo difficulties when they have animals to dispose off. ?“As leaders from the county, we call for joint efforts between the county leadership and the national Government to open up all markets that have been closed in Baringo,” said Kamket. ?

He urged for an immediate meeting between the County Commissioner and Governor to discuss the possible way forward.

Silale Ward Member of County Assembly Nelson Letole alleged that the security team does not pursue cattle raiders whenever they strike.

He suggested a meeting between leaders from Turkana, Baringo and Laikipia counties be held to help curb the cattle rustling menace.
