KENYA: Business activities have been interrupted at a section of Eldoret Central Business District after a sewer line blocked and spilt waste within the town.

The situation has been worsened by the ongoing rains and residence is calling for urgent intervention to repair the line. The sewer flows through Sosiani main stage, one of the biggest Public Service Vehicle (PSV) termini in the town posing serious health threats.

Mr David Koech an MPESA dealer within the stage complained of a terrible stench that emanate from the flowing sewer.

“We have been facing this problem for quite a while yet nothing seems to be done. The stench that greets us every morning we come to work and for the rest of the day is unbearable,” said Koech.

Quick remedy

“It has also disrupted my business because no one will stand the stench that emanates from the flowing sewer. I hope this will be addressed as soon as possible.”

Matatu operators within the busy termini are asking the Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (ELDOWAS) to take quick action saying their health status is at risk.

The operators said they do not have an alternative forcing them to stick with the condition that has for the past days worsened with the ongoing rains that pounds the region.

“We must operate from this stage therefore we are exposed to serious health risks each day. Pedestrians boarding public service vehicles from here also suffer the consequences,” said a matatu operator.

Commuters have also complained with most of them terming the condition a menace that need not to happen at any one time.

Janet Jeptum, a commuter who spoke to The Standard said she was shocked to see the sewer flowing at the busy stage when there is a heavy downpour.
