Machakos, Kenya:  At least 50 pupils narrowly escaped death when the roof and walls of their classroom collapsed following heavy rains on Wednesday.

The afternoon accident occured at Mukanyi Primary School in Kathiani district when pupils were busy learning.

It all happened in a lightning speed when a loud bang was heard sending the pupils into confusion as they scampered for safety as the building slowly came down.

Screams of dispare littered in the rains as the pupils escaped into different directions for safety.

Their colleagues attracted by the screams also walked out of their classrooms to witness the incident in the heavy rains.

Fortunately no pupil was reported injured. The school suspended lessons to ponder what to do next after the rains subsided.

The school's head teacher Mr J. Musembi who was far away from the school expressed disappointment over the incident but however, thanked God for saving lives of the fateful pupils.

The school's chairman of the development committee Mr Boniface Mumo, termed the incident unfortunate.

He estimated the loss incured out of the incident as amounting to over sh200,000 .
