Members of Parliament in Nairobi County allied to the CORD team have dismissed claims that their supporters are planning to disrupt today’s inauguration ceremony.

Led by Ruaraka MP Tom Kajwang, the MPs said the number of recent police statements targeting residents of their constituencies individually and in groups were alarmist and unproductive.

“As members of the National Assembly, we insist that the police desist from claims that tarnish the names of individual citizens and cast communities in Kibera and Mathare in perpetual negative light,” Kajwang said at a Press conference held at Parliament Buildings yesterday.

He added that the claims were aimed at intimidating and humiliating CORD supporters.

“Claims that there are planned demonstrations and disruptions are just cheap politics and propaganda meant to daunt our supporters,” he said.

Kibra MP Kenneth Okoth said they fed up with having their people victimised, intimidated and harassed.

Expressed concerns

He defended the four people mentioned by police from his constituency, saying some were not even in Nairobi.

“We know for certain that amongst the alleged planners of demonstrations and plots to disrupt the swearing in of President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta are not available or capable of organising the said actions,” he said.

He said they had earlier on met with the Inspector General David Kimaiyo to express their concerns, and called on the police to avoid making public the identities of innocent Kenyans without proper investigations.

“The information has to be credible and verified before they are made public,” said Okoth.

Edward Cromwel Onyango Ketta, Fredrick Odhiambo Ong’ondo, Jeckonia Junga Onyango and a Mr Mazira who is the deputy director of Haki Shape, a CBO based in Kibera, were summoned by police for questioning regarding claims they planned to disrupt today’s swearing-in of Uhuru and his deputy.
