Defending champions Kenya Police (Chafua Chafua) retained their title after registering 21 points to during the first leg of the National Boxing League.
Chafua Chafua that is trained by former Commonwealth Games gold medalist George ‘Foreman’ Onyango, won the hotly contested league staged at Kisumu’s Ofafa Hall.
Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) came second with 19 points followed by Kenya Prisons on 11 points. Coast and Kenyatta National Hospital collected five points each to tie on the fourth position.
Kisumu County and Administration Police each garnered three points to finish sixth, while central and Nairobi Metropolitan did not score a point during the event graced by Amateur Boxing Association officials led by chairman John Kameta.
During the event, Commonwealth Games silver medalist Benson Gicharu of Kenya Police beat Nick Okoth of KDF on points as Charles Okoth of KDF forced Anthony Oduor of Kisumu into early retirement in the heavyweight division.
Peter Opudi of KDF beat Michael Okwisia of Police in the super heavyweight category as Mary Muthoni of Nakuru ABA beat Eunice Mukami of KDF in the women’s category.
In the light fly weight category, Peter Mungai of Police, beat Shafi Bahar of AP.
In the flyweight category, Maurice Ochieng’ of Kenya Police hit Ulid Mohamed of KDF, while in the light weight category, Joseph Njogu of Prisons beat KDF’s Musa Gitonga .
Victor Odhiambo of KDF beat Ben Omondi of Coast in the light welter weight division as Moor Rayton Okwiri of Prisons beat Edwin Onongo of KNH while in the welterweight category on 3-0 points.
In the middleweight fight, Nick Abaka of KDF beat Nick Odhiambo of Prisons.In the light heavyweight category, Ely Ajowi of Kenya Police was too smart for Fredrick Onyango of KDF.
