KENYA: Deputy President-elect William Ruto’s family and supporters have finalised plans to travel to Nairobi for his swearing-in.

His mother Sarah Cheruiyot left Eldoret on Saturday with some relatives for the Tuesday event at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Nairobi. She said relatives, villagers, and supporters raised Sh1,400 each for hiring three buses to cater for their transport to the capital.

Ruto will be sworn-in alongside President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta who is expected to break the tradition of Presidents holding up the Bible while taking oath of office, by allowing his wife Margaret Kenyatta to hold it for him.

Ms Cheruiyot said she was elated to attend the ceremony that heralds what she termed her son’s milestone in life. In an interview with The Standard On Sunday at her home in Kamagut, she said she could not confirm the number of those to accompany her as many want to attend the event.

Many expressed willingness but we cannot all go. Those who will go will represent the rest. But I was touched by the goodwill at home,” she added.
