Kajiado, Kenya: Police are holding two women suspected to be part of a cartel of shoplifters in Kitengela, Kajiado County.

The two were captured on a CCTV camera at a boutique Wednesday. The suspects escaped death narrowly as a mob bayed for their blood but were rescued by police on patrol.

The three are suspected to be behind a cartel stealing clothes from shops. A third lady escaped after sensing danger.

The two, in their mid-twenties, were captured on a CCTV camera shoplifting in a boutique at Kitengela town two weeks ago. They were again captured yesterday before shop owners raised alarm.

“We have lost clothes estimated at over Sh70,000 to the suspect customers in two weeks,” said Jane Nduta, the shop owner.

She said twice a week the women come into her shop and as one engages her in discussion, the others would be busy stealing and stuffing the loot in buibuis.

“Today they arrived and pretended they were trying on the clothes as the third, covered in a shuka folded and stashed them away,” said Mary Wanjiku, a shop attendant.

The shop owner said she installed the CCTV camera a month ago.
