Eldoret, Kenya: Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) has been urged to speed up processing payment for officials who managed the tests last year.
Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) on Monday said it had received numerous complaints from its members who are yet to receive their dues, months after supervising the examinations.
The union’s national vice-chairman Julius Korir said the examinations body should come out clearly and explain the cause of delays and, if at all, there was any problem with the Treasury.
Speaking to The Standard in Eldoret on Monday, Korir said invigilators sacrificed their time in managing the tests.
“It is unfair to treat the officials this way after delivering their services. Examination officials sacrificed their time and even holidays in managing examinations,” said Korir.
Frustrations
Korir said he received complaints from Kuppet members with some sending him text messages to express their frustrations over delayed payment.
“Hi bro (brother), supervisors, invigilators and examiners were told to upload their Identification Cards to be paid and things are not working nationwide, they want their money now,” read an SMS sent to Korir.
Knec, however, said they had placed an advertisement in two dailies urging the officials to forward their details so that they could be paid.
Electronic data
“All officials will be paid and they have been asked to forward their data. We want their details because the process will be done electronically this time,” said, Knec acting corporate communications officer Frida Were on telephone.
Were also said that examination officials have always received their pay around April, which would be the same case this year.
She appealed to officials to access Knec website and forward their data.
At the same time, Kuppet has welcomed the Supreme Court’s verdict that endorsed the election of Uhuru Kenyatta as president in the March 4 elections. Korir said they would work with the new Government once it is sworn into office.
