Nandi, Kenya: Campaigns for Nandi Central and Bomet Kenya National Union of Teachers branches by-elections scheduled for next week are in top gear.
The polls to be held on April 5 and 6 are meant replace officials who were recently elected to the National Assembly.
In Bomet County, teachers will be seeking to replace former Executive Secretary Paul Savimbi Bii, who is currently Chepalungu Member of Parliament.
In Nandi Central, Zipporah Kering, who was the branch executive secretary, won the post of Women Representative, Nandi County.
Speaking to The Standard on the telephone, Knut national chairman Wilson Sossion promised members and aspirants that the exercise would be free and fair.
“We want all our members to turn out and elect leaders whom they want to represent them. The elections shall be presided over by the Commissioner of Labour,” said Sossion.
Mr Sossion said only members with pay slips that show that they are Knut members would be allowed to vote.
“To avoid non-members from infiltrating the exercise, we request our members to come with original pay slips not more than three months old and the national identity cards,” said the chairman.
Bomet acting Executive Secretary Malel Langat will be facing it off with Cecilia Mutai and David Mutai.
Kuppet Executive Secretary Akello Misori said the union was yet to commence its replacements for members who resigned and went into politics.
Meanwhile, the Teachers Service Commission has said the replacement of teachers who left the commission due to natural attrition has been completed.
Commission Secretary Gabriel Lengoiboni said successful candidates have already reported to their stations. On those who resigned to contest in the just ended elections, Mr Lengoiboni said they would soon be replaced.
He said the commission would give priority to those who have never been employed.
