Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has reshuffled principals who have over stayed in their stations in a move aimed at improving academic performance in Kwale County.

Four secondary schools have been affected by the move. These are Shimba, Kaya Tiwi, Lukore and Lungalunga.

In Shimba, a provincial mixed high school, its immediate former principal Robert Maima has changed positions with Mr Kitauro Salim of Kaya Tiwi, a district school. M M Nduthu, initially the Lukore High School head changed places with Lungalunga’s Salim Mwakijana. The principal of Ambassador Mwakwere High School, Mohammed Mwasahani, has been demoted because of attaining low grades.

“When head teachers overstay in schools they lack creative ideas, but when transferred to another place they will generate new ideas to improve the standards,” said the Kwale County TSC Director Timado Lechet.

Mr Lechet said the move was aimed at rejuvenating standards for long-term improvement and said such deployment will now be the norm.

“Kwale County has slept for too long and it is high time we see it performing. We have also to ask ourselves what impetus changes we need to put in place for primary schools to enhance curriculum implementation,” stated Lechet.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers Kwale County Secretary General Mackenzie Tuki said the movements should be backed by proper reasons.

“Transferring just because someone has overstayed in one place is unprofessional and does not add value. Changes should have a human face as it can also demotivate,” he said.

Kwale has been appearing among the last schools on the merit list across the country. Cultural beliefs, high poverty levels and human-wildlife conflicts have all been blamed for the poor show.
