NAIROBI, KENYA: Prime Minister Raila Odinga announced on Tuesday that Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) has shelved plans to conduct joint nominations in the January 17 primaries.
Raila said Cord will however conduct joint nominations in Nairobi, Nakuru and Mombasa.
The PM made the announcement after meeting MPs allied to Cord at Nairobi Club. Raila's running mate Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka also attended the meeting.
Raila’s announcement comes in the wake of protests by parties affiliated to Cord over the joint nominations announced by the Cord Joint Elections Board
The eight parties claimed they were being arm-twisted to enter into the joint nominations against their will by some selfish individuals within the alliance.
Officials Wavinya Ndeti of Chama Cha Uzalendo (CCU), Kalembe Ndile of The Independent Party (TIP) and Stephen Nyarangi of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said in a joint statement last weekend that their parties will conduct own nominations but support candidature of Raila/Kalonzo ticket.
